Being a freelance web consultant, it is hard for me to find a good place to work at, especially in a city like Los Angeles. Sure a lot of us prefer to work at Starbucks since there is no cost, you get meet random people sometimes but it can be quite packed sometimes or hard to focus with everything that’s happening inside the coffee house. If you’re a student like me, perhaps working from home or at your local library, or perhaps school. The disadvantage of the library and school however is that it may not let you have access to your server for FTP uploading and such and theres quite some restrictions on their networks, and perhaps it may even be monitored. I currently work as a freelancer from home. Although it is easy, there’s also a disadvantage such as household errands. Eventually, if you work at home and your spouse or roommate works onsite at whatever job they are doing, you will consider doing more household chores and errands more often, or they will blame you if something is not right in the home.
Some of us are not fortunate enough, like the little people that are just starting out on making the switch to freelancing or just doing side gigs while working at a company (like myself) to rent or lease a small office where we can commute to and conduct business at. Although, I am definately thinking about that a lot for the past few days, it has come to my attention that the prices are quite steep. Sure there are cheap ones but those are rented rooms within an office so if a client were to meet with you at your office, they would go through the other company’s door, then to your own room. The main point of being a freelancer is that you are self-employed and you don’t work for a boss and renting out a room at a company’s office won’t help you get that image.
