8 Useful and Underrated PHP Functions
Posted by Vu Tran on May 27th, 2009 in PHP Resources

Well, throughout the last few weeks on developing my web application, I’ve stumbled across many useful PHP functions that might have gone unnoticed by many people. I, for one, had no idea that these functions existed until I saw it in the documentations from PHP’s website.

Checking My Site Report Today
Posted by Vu Tran on May 27th, 2009 in Web Marketing

So I was checking my website report today, and I found out that I have finally been assigned a page rank by Google. Although I’m still learning more about search engine optimization, I don’t get why my website is assigned a PR without the “www” while the “www” is left blank or different. Other than that, I’m totally content that I am finally on the score boards and I take this as a sign saying that I am heading on the right path.

I Saw A Music Video This Morning
Posted by Vu Tran on May 23rd, 2009 in Miscellaneous

This morning, I was eating breakfast and watching MTV then suddenly this music video appeared. “No Rain” by a group called “Blind Melon”. You can watch the music video from YouTube here. It reminds me of Microsoft’s Windows XP default background called “Bliss”. From the bright blue sky, to the vibrant green grass, it quite hits the target. Looks like we know where Microsoft got their inspiration for the whole Bliss theme for Windows XP.

Marketing on Social Media Websites
Posted by Vu Tran on May 21st, 2009 in Web Marketing

Ever since I have joined Twitter and started to follow people in the same industry as myself, and also receive some return follows and random follows from other people with the same interest, I have noticed that quite a lot of them constantly post blog article links. Although some may not post as much as others, there are some in which I am following that seems to be posting 24/7 every 5 minutes or so. Although Twitter is a very effective tool for social media marketing, I think just by spamming links like that can be quite robotic and eventually degrade your reputation. I’ve removed many people for doing so as they don’t seem like a real person, but just some hired employee of a company or website to mass follow, and mass posting of blog articles.

Why I Think Snow Leopard Will Fail
Posted by Vu Tran on May 19th, 2009 in Apple

We all know that Microsoft and Apple is competing with each other for the release of their newest operating system, Windows 7 and Mac OS X Snow Leopard. While 7 will boast a lot of new features, performance improvements, and stability and mainly usability and user-friendliness, Snow Leopard is more geared towards system performance.

Although Apple has a lot of support from fans and followers on the Snow Leopard release, we have to consider the people who consumes their products. Most, if not all, are wealthy individuals who can actually afford the system. Many of them are graphics designers, audio, and video producers. In other words, most of these people lives in the world of arts, and that is why they choose Apple and their appealing design as their personal computer. Many of them, planning to stand in line to purchase the new operating system, will probably be upset. Why? These people create art for a living and the demand for art and design is much higher than actual usability. While Snow Leopard may show a great improvement in performance, many of them won’t even notice. They will become upset with the lack of changes in features as Snow Leopard mainly emphasizes core improvements.

In comparison to Windows 7, where there are a lot of physical changes, many people who follows a market for visual appeal will most likely consider Windows 7 rather than Snow Leopard as the visual improvements is more steeper from Vista to 7, than from Leopard to Snow Leopard.

Think Similar
Posted by Vu Tran on May 19th, 2009 in Apple, Microsoft, Rants

I recently saw this website the other day and was amazed at how clever the idea was. What seems to be a website supporting Microsoft’s operating system – Vista and their newly upcoming Windows 7 – is actually ranting about how poor the quality and design is. I love sarcasm so I really liked that idea. In fact, so much that I pulled an all-nighter that same night and made this website. You can tell it’s just the opposite. Having been a long time PC user, and also a Mac user (I also own a Macbook and went through several iPods/iPhones), I’d thought it would be funny to create a counter-site. From both my experience on Mac and PC, they both have they’re own advantages and disadvantages but as a computer enthusiast, knowing the facts about the industry puts me on Microsoft’s side rather than Apple.

8 Creative CMS Website Designs
Posted by Vu Tran on May 17th, 2009 in Reviews, Web Design

While developing my own content-management system for the company in which I’m working for, I was bound to research on other CMS from the inside and the outside. From the developer’s view to the designer’s view, I’ve visited countless number of web development companie’s website and their CMS websites. A lot of them follow the same principles from one another. If you’re a company or someone that is making their own CMS system or have one already developed for your clients, you might ought to consider to brand your CMS after looking at these websites.

A Freelancers Work Environment
Posted by Vu Tran on May 15th, 2009 in Business, Freelance

Being a freelance web consultant, it is hard for me to find a good place to work at, especially in a city like Los Angeles. Sure a lot of us prefer to work at Starbucks since there is no cost, you get meet random people sometimes but it can be quite packed sometimes or hard to focus with everything that’s happening inside the coffee house. If you’re a student like me, perhaps working from home or at your local library, or perhaps school. The disadvantage of the library and school however is that it may not let you have access to your server for FTP uploading and such and theres quite some restrictions on their networks, and perhaps it may even be monitored. I currently work as a freelancer from home. Although it is easy, there’s also a disadvantage such as household errands. Eventually, if you work at home and your spouse or roommate works onsite at whatever job they are doing, you will consider doing more household chores and errands more often, or they will blame you if something is not right in the home.

Twitter API Integration
Posted by Vu Tran on May 13th, 2009 in Web Development

As you may have noticed or not, I implemented my very own Twitter status on the front page of my website several days ago. Reading up on the documentations over at the Twitter website, it seems that they set limits in which a web application can make a call to the API.

Web Designer or Web Developer
Posted by Vu Tran on May 12th, 2009 in Web Design, Web Development

Lately, I’ve noticed many people consider themselves the either or and not both. I consider myself more of a developer since I have more experience in programming and developing applications. While browsing the Internet for the past several days, I’ve taken notice on the designs and functions of each website that has to do with web design or web development and there is an absolute line that distance the two types apart.
